Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he enjoyed playing numerous card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very competitive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he would play countless hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus even more on the game.
The real advancement in his skills happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would regularly play against each other. Howard was able to access several of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his logical thinking abilities. He used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker arena ever. Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
