Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved betting on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very competitive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to play some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he would play countless hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He judged he might better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus attention even more on the game.

The definite improvement in his skills happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would often wager against one another. He had access into some of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit holdem.

He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the best female players the poker world today. Howard headed to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
